Corfu, the island of Greece

Corfu is one of the islands belonging to Greece located in the Ionian Sea. The island’s capital city is also Corfu with the population of about 28,000 people. As the capital of the municipality there is also located the Ionian University. The main source of income in Corfu is wine and olive production along with sea trade and tourism.

The island was inhabited since 1300 B.C. and there lived Corinthians, Eretrians. It took part in many wars including the Peloponnesian War, but always led mercantile policy and wasn’t much involved in the combats. It was conquered several times by the Greek cities until it finally became a part of the Roman Empire and remained there till its fall. Another famous period is the Venetian rule on Corfu, which lasted from 1401 till 1797. During this period Corfu suffered five Ottoman sieges, but remained unconquered. After the Napoleonic Wars the city became the property of the United Kingdom until 1864 when the island reunited with Greece. Corfu suffered both in the First and Second World Wars. After the Italian and German occupation a long period of rebuilding began on Corfu.

There are very few monuments of ancient times, but it is still interesting to visit them: Poseidon temple, Achilleion, tomb of Menekrates. On the island tourists can find many preserved Italian architectural monuments such as the City Hall, Old and New Castles, Palace of Mon Repos and palace of Sts. Michael and George. Most of the sights were destroyed during the Second World War and wasn’t ever restored.

Viking Line builds unique ferries
